I will provide multiple links so there is little to no excuse for not being able to access these materials.
The literature side of the forum isn't very defined as far as what represents 3DT, so I'm proposing a list of books that everyone should read in order to benefit themselves. This list works on a general level and is not designed to lean a certain way. I also know the stigma in most places is "I don't have time" or "reading is for nerds", so I wanted to make sure the books aren't tomes and get their point across or are at least engaging for most of us. I hope you appreciate the effort put forth.
Note: Some of the PDF sections are actually epub or mobi files. Apologies if you do not prefer those. I quickly browsed libgen for these copies.
1. Beowulf
Mandatory epic poem, if you hate poetry then read this and this alone.

2. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
I'd say the best place to start with Lewis. It is a clever narrative that intertwines a good understanding of how men are broken down by other forces. From here you can read his books in any order.

3. Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam
I know a lot of us struggle with isolation or networking, so this book is a good stepping stone in figuring those things out. Unlike a lot of books that just spew data and shrug, Putnam provides helpful guidance to solve our concern of social decay.

4. King Warrior Magician Lover by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette
Moore and Gillette do a great job crafting a bitesize Jungian survival guide for the modern man. We can look within ourselves and usually others more "effortlessly" the archetypes that separate the boys from the men. Essential read for sure.

5. Wise Blood by Flannery O'Connor
An early example of southern gothic literature that focuses on what drives a man to retribution. What lengths do we go for forgiveness and why? Is it wise to shed blood in this way? What is glory and what is vainglory? A powerful story.

6. The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima
A story that focuses on the unhealthy obsessions we can harbor. Whether we realize they are unhealthy or part of a bigger process.

7. This Is Water by David Foster Wallace
Bit of a cheat here, as you can find the commencement speech he gave that was later transcribed into the book on youtube, but it is still something all of us need to hear or read every now and then. A nice pocket piece of wisdom to get you through the day to day.

8. Human Destructiveness by Anthony Storr
Psychiatrist who studied Jungian analysis breaks down the reasons we can act upon dark and cruel deeds. What causes people to engage with others who do these misdeeds? Admittedly a lot of nobrainers here but for the uninitiated it is a breeze to get through and for younger members is definitely essential.

God Bless and Happy Reading
P.S. Feel free to share what you think the average 3DT user should read to benefit themselves in literature or other affairs.
“He's passed on to a better, more euphemistic place.”
Beowulf and Screwtape letters are books I read as a child, but I remember very little of both. My mom always wanted my siblings and I to get exposure to classics, especially religious classics. Even if I don't remember most of it, it helped with literacy a lot, which is something way more important than the books themselves.

You're half right. Problem with modern writing is the gateway effect is less and less of an excuse for poor writing.
Definitely need to show children older books when you first want them to read a chapter book now. At the very least something in the realm of Chronicles of Narnia or The Magic Tree House, and then add more of Lewis's works along with Dahl and other English writers who clearly had more wit about them. From there it is a snowball and they should develop an interest all their own.
The messages in these books are very much important. No reason to pick them up instead of a dictionary with that mindset.

i agree, most classic and old books are next to worthless in terms of content, storytelling, or anything. it's really about learning vocabulary and grammer, which is all i got out of reading classics my whole childhood. i even read some more classics lately, utter waste of time.

I agree with Bowling Alone. It's a book that's basically used by insipid right wingers to say that diversity are why clubs are dying, not the funny box in your living room. There's no value in the book.
Can you explain how people are worse off reading Mere Christianity?
