“He's passed on to a better, more euphemistic place.”

I've believed that living life in a sustainable way was the most important part of whatever your routine or habits are. The term "sustainability" has seemingly been co-opted by people who want to pedal snake oil like product certifications and increased regulation on industry, but the core principle is the same. I choose to use the word "longevity" to prevent confusion, but I'm referring to the same concept, just in more general terms. Since it's what I'm most familiar with, pointing out the trend of software becoming more and more brittle, requiring more and more central management, and lasting less and less time is easy for me. From a user perspective, you're expected to have an online subscription to use hardware that should work offline, tying its lifetime artificially to some service that requires extra upkeep. From a developer's perspective, software is built with more and more helper services and brittle architectures that require herculean efforts to maintain. To add an extra layer to this, more and more of the software industry is propped up by underfunded open source projects that don't make any money for those maintaining them. Unfortunately, you can't bet the world on the autistic drive of a few people to keep doing things for free. My comments on the above are pretty widely known and dissected to death, so I'm not really interested in going deeper into the topic. What I will say is that the same applies to all areas of life, and you need to take longevity into account when starting any habit or investing time or money into any item. Can you keep doing this? What's your plan for stopping? How much time will this take from you to maintain? I use these questions to inform my actions as much as I can. For example, when I was looking for a car, I tried to find one that would require as little upkeep as possible, had parts available readily, and would be easy to work on. Somewhat similarly, I choose not to drink caffeine regularly because the effect won't be sustainable; I'd need to drink more and more to keep it useful. I think a lot of problems can be solved by being conscientious of the longevity of time use and consumption.
