Learning Thread
Posted this other places before, but a post about it here seemed necessary.
What languages are you learning? What tools are you using?
For me, I'm learning Spanish and Mandarin, and I use Anki for memorizing Chinese characters, Duolingo for Spanish. I occasionally use Anki for Spanish sentences but not often.
I think the coolest part of learning a language is being able to take part in their side of the Internet, and eventually maybe visiting a country that speaks the language you're learning. For a while I was into Japanese but that's a genuinely shitty language when it comes to how it was put together, plus everyone already seems to be trying to learn it so it doesn't have much of a novelty appeal. I learned Hirigana and Katakana (its phonetic alphabets) but then when it came to Kanji I just got too frustrated to justify learning it. Funny thing is that my hate for Kanji got so bad that I started learning the original Chinese characters just out of spite which admittedly was pretty stupid but that's what happened. That's what got me into Mandarin and I've been enjoying learning that for the most part since. My goal is to eventually be able to visit Taiwan. As for Spanish, it's a generally useful language and with it I can visit basically all of South America which always seemed cool. Also have some South American friends so that's another motivation.

I used to study Japanese to play PSO2!!!
I recently moved to Korea so I'm trying to learn that now, its nowhere near as hard as Japanese!!
Koreans are a lot more friendly and interactive online towards foreigners compared to Japanese(they usually would just ignore me).
I wanna visit China one day, Shanghai looks interesting, but I don't really know much about asian culture in general..

And you live in Korea?
Anyway I wouldn't recommend going to China as a foreigner, it's not a good idea unless you're asian, especially ethnically Chinese. Otherwise you're gonna be treated a lot worse than a normal Chinese person. Taiwan is a lot nicer and more friendly, plus it's not a giant communist nation.

What's funny is I once read a post someone made who had learned Chinese and he basically said you shouldn't because of having to deal with business all the time. Hardly a reason not to learn a language since it's avoidable, but it kind of shed light on working on business in China. Not knocking Chinese people, just knocking China. And sadly a lot of the culture there can corrupt people. It's one of if not the least charitable nation on Earth, so what do you expect

I always sucked at languages, I'd study my ass off and bomb midterms. Only reason I managed a passing grade was because of all the time I spent at office hours, professor bumped up some scores

I always recommend going through the basics (calligraphy, orthography, prosody, grammar...) with a proper teacher to avoid bad habits that can persist forever

You can apply the changes yourself by opening the deck, and navigating through the "Study Now" --> "Edit" --> "Cards..." menu tree.
There's some purely preferential stuff in there, so have a play around with it yourself if need be.

I also downloaded [a href="https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1560546734"]a deck[/a] for [a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shavian_alphabet"]the Shavian Alphabet[/a]. I'm holding off on studying that too seriously until I can get the hang of using it on a keyboard.

pleco is a good tool to learn chinese characters, setting your machine to the language you want to learn helps too, since you already know how to operate it anyway

For a very brief time I had Steam in it but Switched back because my knowledge still wasn't good enough yet. I only know a little more than 200 characters right now and that's surprisingly few when you need to operate an interface. Setting my system to it would probably be a small disaster lol

termer you do start getting comfortable with that shit over time by integrating it that way. added the keyboards to fb and SMS once i was proficient to the point of rote memory commitment in hiragana & kana because by then the only thing i was really getting "used to" was the keyboard layout, but even so it further bolstered what i knew. actually come to think of it i even started to remember kanji a little better the more i used the keyboards, because a surprising amount of hiragana would autocorrect to the kanji.

Might consider later, but right now my browser and most everything else is in Spanish for immersion in that. Chinese is another thing altogether and I'm gonna wait until my reading ability in it is good enough to understand what the hell I'm looking at when I see a button or text in it, etc.

if any1 is attempting to learn a slavic language duolingo makes you want to kill yourself less, or you could just get a moldovan rent boy and go from there lmao

I'd like to pick up Spanish and Portuguese sometime, they are pretty close to my language, especially the former: I already make sense of 80/90% of what I read in Spanish, but I cannot compose a phrase myself
Also Lithuanian sounds like uncanny valley portuguese

Nice, a thread about one of my biggest interests.
I am interested in linguistics and philology. I of course love seeing how language and words are now but a big part of my interest in linguistics is historical linguistics. I speak Arabic and English natively, German as a third language, and below that is Latin (which isn't so good but I try).
What I usually do is use language "subconsciously" by typing it out or speaking it and looking up words to remember. My mind soaks up information much more when I'm not conscious of it. But, grammar/syntax I read out of a book.
If you ever want to try out Latin, try Lingua Latina per se Illustrata by Hans Ørberg. It's completely in Latin but it's super easy.
It is however a bit pricey to have physically.
Always happy to discuss old computers, philology, linguistics, history, and video games.

Come over to my site. I talk about retrogaming, computing, history, linguistics, and more. Not a lot right now, but more is always coming.
